Piglet price drives up pig price further

19 February 2021 - Chanti Oussoren - 5 comments

The piglet price has been on the rise for some time now. Until recently, the fattening pig market was not able to benefit from higher prices, but now there is something positive in the market and the DCA stock price is rising for the second week in a row.

The supply on the fattening pig market is shrinking and the pressure on the market appears to be easing somewhat. Last week the DCA Beursprijs 2.0 was able to start a small increase and this was also followed by Dutch slaughterhouses. Although the oversupply has not yet been completely eliminated, the piglet price is pushing up the pig price further.

Fewer pigs on the slaughter hook
Despite the fact that the oversupply is decreasing, fewer pigs were slaughtered in week 6 than in the previous week. With 334.113 pigs on the slaughter hook, the level is 4.000 heads lower than in week 5. The average slaughter weight has remained the same as last week and, at 102 kilos, is still well above the weight of last year.

In Germany, the number of slaughters has fallen more sharply as a result of logistical problems due to the winter weather. In total, more than 6 pigs were hanging from the slaughter hook in week 795.000, in week 5 the slaughter figure was even more than 50.000 pigs higher. However, the slaughter weights have decreased further. The average weight in week 6 was 99,8 kilos.

VEZG breaks through long-term stability
Despite the lower slaughter figure in Germany, the VEZG quotation started an increase this week. The pig price there had been stable for 13 weeks, but rose again for the first time since May last year. The increase is the result of a rapid reduction in the oversupply and a smaller new flow of pigs.

DCA Stock price continues to rise
The DCA Stock Price 2.0 also managed to maintain the price increase that started last week this week. The quotation of slaughtered pigs increases by €0,04 to €1,26 per kilo. The price of live pigs also increases and increases by €0,03 to €0,94.
