AVP discovered for the first time in Dahme-Spreewald

22 February 2021 - Chanti Oussoren

The African swine fever (ASF) in Germany has been puzzling for some time. There is intensive hunting and the infection detections continue to rise. The infection number has now passed 700 and an infection has been discovered for the first time in Dahme-Spreewald.

Currently, the counter stands at 708 confirmed infections among wild boars. The pig herd is still free from the virus. Most cases come from the state of Brandenburg. No fewer than 660 infected wild boars have been detected there. The other 48 infections were found in Saxony.

First find in Dahme-Spreewald
An infection has been discovered for the first time in the Dahme-Spreewald district, the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI) confirmed last weekend. It concerns a carcass of a newborn that was found in the immediate vicinity of the Oder-Spree district, where several infections have already been detected. Although it is the first find in the Dahme-Spreewald district, it is located within the current core zone. This concerns core area 3, which extends over an area of 2.100 hectares in the districts of Oder-Spree and Dahme-Spreewald. The find therefore has no consequences for the already existing restricted zones in the area.

The double fence of the 'white zone', which concerns the core areas, is almost completed in the Dahme-Spreewald district. In Oder-Spree, the fencing is already complete. The fencing consists of about 200 kilometers of fencing.

Dissatisfaction with the speed of the hunt
For many farmers and hunters, the current approach is not moving fast enough. It is feared that it will be difficult to reduce the wild boar population from March, because sows are in heat.

Farmers also want clarity when, after the snow has thawed, access to the fields will be allowed again in the affected districts. In mid-September, the authorities have restrict the use of agricultural or forestry areas because of the need to fight ASF. The use of agricultural or forestry areas may be officially restricted or banned for a period of 6 months and this period is almost over. The district administration promises a directive. According to the Märkische Oderzeitung, it should be available by mid-March at the latest.
