10 March 2021 - Chanti Oussoren

The German pork price is recovering well after major setbacks last year. Despite the adverse effects of African swine fever (ASF) in the country, the pig sector appears to be recovering well. The important export markets in Asia, which have been lost to Germany, can be somewhat compensated with pork exports within Europe. Because other European countries fill Chinese demand and therefore export less meat within Europe, German sales within Europe may actually increase.

Now that more countries have agreed to the regionalization principle, which allows exports from ASF-free areas, the situation on the German market is improving. Singapore and Vietnam, among others, have now agreed to the regionalization principle. The Chinese borders are currently closed, as is access to the Philippines. But discussions are still ongoing with China and Japan, which recently reached a regionalization agreement with Hungary.

The VEZG quotation increased again this week by €0,10, reaching €1,50 per kilo. Together with the price increase of the 2 previous weeks, the quotation amounts to the most significant price increase of 3 consecutive weeks. In the past 3 weeks the price has increased by as much as €0,29. In the past 5 years, the record stood at €0,27 in just 3 weeks in 2019.

Dutch sector
The price of pigs in the Netherlands is also increasing considerably. The DCA Scholarship Price 2.0 rose by €0,10 last Friday. This example was already followed by Vion slaughterhouse with an increase of €0,11 and today Compaxo also implemented a similar increase. It is striking that Vion emphasizes that meat sales prices are still unable to keep up with the strong price increase. They do not provide any further explanation at this time.
