Germany is loosening the reins again regarding the strict measures in Oder-Spree and Dahme-Spreewald to combat African swine fever. This is possible because the core area around the places Friedland and Grunow-Dammendorf is now enclosed by a massive fence of 138 kilometers.
The white zone in Oder-Spree and Dahme-Spreewald is ready. Anna Heyer Stuffer, head of the African swine fever crisis team, made this known last week. Because the largest core area is now fenced with a fence of 138 kilometers, a number of strict measures can be reversed. For example, forestry (with the exception of logging by large machines) is possible again. Most agricultural activities in the area are also allowed again.
"An area of approximately 400 square kilometers has now been cordoned off. This means that we can now start removing the several thousand wild boars in the area in order to break the chain of infection. If a boar tests negative for African swine fever, it will the meat can be sold in the chain. In addition, we are switching from a phase with extensive rules to a phase with only minor restrictions," writes Stuffer.

A 'white zone' was also introduced in the region in mid-December, but due to repeated destruction of the fence or the stealing of certain elements, the released measures had to be reversed each time. Meanwhile, the German police have numbered the gates, posts and fences to make it more difficult to use or resell. "The number can also be used to determine where a gate has been stolen."
