AVP strikes at large company in Poland

22 March 2021 - Chanti Oussoren

African swine fever (ASF) has struck again at a large pig farm in Poland. It concerns a company in the province of Lubusz. It is the second largest company in Poland to be affected.

For a moment, the AVP situation in Poland seemed to calm down. The number of infections increased rapidly among wild boars, but no infections were detected in the Polish pig herd this year. This has now come to an end with the discovery of AVP on the pig farm in Western Poland.

Second largest infection
The outbreak was confirmed on March 17. All approximately 16.000 pigs must be culled. This makes it the second largest pig farm in Poland affected by ASF and has to cull all animals. The largest company was hit in March last year in the province of Lebus, where 24.000 pigs had to be culled.

With the new infection, the total number of affected pig farms in western Poland stands at 13. Since the first discovery of ASF in Poland, the virus has been confirmed on a total of 341 different farms. For the whole of 2020, the counter stands at 103 companies.
