Breeding pigs from Taiwan to the Philippines

24 March 2021 - Chanti Oussoren

The Philippines has started importing pork from Taiwan and the plan is to also import breeding pigs to rebuild the pig population.

Due to African swine fever (ASF) outbreaks, the Philippines is unable to meet domestic demand for pork and is a major buyer of pork worldwide. Last month, the Philippines imported a small amount of Taiwanese pork as a trial.

Foot and mouth disease free
Last June, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) declared Taiwan a foot-and-mouth disease-free zone. This means that Taiwan is allowed to export pig products again for the first time in 23 years.

Since Taiwan has kept AVP at bay and is known for quality pork, the Philippines is eager to import Taiwanese pork. The Philippines also wants to import more than 1.000 breeding pigs in order to rebuild the domestic pig herd, which was severely depleted by AVP.
