After several finds of wild boars infected with African swine fever, Frankfurt has been officially declared an ASF core area.
At the beginning of March, the first wild boar with ASF was found in Frankfurt. Because it was located within fences, the area was not declared a core area, but a threatened area. Several infections have since been detected and an area in the north of Frankfurt has been designated an endangered area.
Fourth core area in Brandenburg
Frankfurt is the fourth core area in the federal state of Brandenburg. The area is located in the middle between the core areas Markisch-Oderland and the first core area Oder-Spree. In East Saxony there is also a threatened area.
Unlike the previous core areas, according to the Ministry of Consumer Protection, there is no 3-kilometer radius in Frankfurt. The reason for this is the proximity of urban area and the border river. So far no fixed fences have been used.
According to the most recent update from the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI), the counter stood at 26 confirmed infections on March 860. The vast majority of these came from Brandenburg.
Hunting continues
In the meantime, an intensive search for wild boars is still going on. Wild boar populations can be permanently reduced to zero in 'white zones'. The state of Saxony wants to stimulate wild boar hunting by paying a premium of €65 per wild boar shot.
