The German meat concern Tönnies managed to get through the corona crisis nicely last year. Limited capacity due to the corona crisis has negatively affected the results at the Rheda-Wiedenbrück site. The other companies achieved stable results.
After a strong first half of 2020, the balance sheet for the second half of the year is weaker as expected. The corona-related closure in Rheda-Wiedenbrück played a role in this. For the whole of 2020, the Tönnies group achieved an annual turnover of approximately €7,05 billion. This is a slight decrease of 3% compared to the previous year. The stagnation is company-specific, mainly due to the 4-week shutdown of the factory at the Rheda location.
Pig price
In addition to the company-specific circumstances, the changing pig market also played a major role in the lower annual turnover. Global lockdowns have negatively impacted pork sales. The outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) in Germany has also contributed a lot. As a result, Germany was limited in international exports. These circumstances in turn had a negative impact on the pig price. According to the annual average in 2020, that price was about 9,3% below the level of 2019. The price per kilogram of slaughtered weight moved between €2,02 and €1,19 last year.
Further growth opportunities organic market
Tönnies is already the market leader in the organic market, but sees further growth opportunities in this segment. Growth was realized last year, especially at international locations. Last year 4,5 million pigs were slaughtered in Denmark, Spain, Great Britain and Poland. A growth of no less than 17%. In Germany 16,3 million pigs were processed, which is a decrease of 2%. This is attributed to the 4-week closure of the Rheda-Wiedenbrück site.
Production of meat substitutes is being expanded
The company also took further steps in the market for meat substitutes. “Last year we built our own factory for vegetarian and vegan products at our headquarters in Böklund. We are now expanding this capacity further and doubling the production area, as consumer demand and confidence in the products grow sustainably,” reports Maximilian Tönnies, son of owner Clemens Tönnies
He emphasizes that they do not see the production of vegetarian and vegan foods as a competition to their meat products, but as an independent market segment and an excellent addition to the wide product range.
Positive review
Despite the setbacks caused by the corona crisis, the company does look back positively on the year as a whole and is satisfied with the results of the entire Tönnies group. “The corona crisis in 2020 was the biggest challenge in the company's history. Our company consists of 29 production sites around the world, 28 of which have had a solid year,” said Clemens Tönnies.
