European pork production increased last year. The European Commission also expects an increase this year, although the growth is decreasing. Beef production fell last year and a further decline is expected in 2021.
In 2020, European pork production will increase by 1,2%, contrary to the European Commission's original forecast. He expected total production to fall. Production also stagnated in the first half of the year, but picked up again later.
The increase in pork production was boosted by strong export demand. Pork exports increased by 2020% in 18. The vast majority was destined for the Chinese market.
The Chinese pig sector may be recovering, but outbreaks of African swine fever are still occurring. For 2021, the Commission therefore estimates that import needs will remain high, although the record levels of 2020 will probably not be matched. European pork production is expected to increase by 0,7%.

Last year, European beef production fell by 1,2%. The slaughter was still slightly above last year's level until April, but after that the corona crisis disrupted production.
Despite the drop in production, exports actually grew. In total, 1,3% more fresh and frozen beef was exported. Exports to Asian markets in particular performed well, but a lot was also exported to Canada and the United States. Imports have fallen by as much as 21%.
Beef production is expected to decline further in 2021, by 0,9%. The reason is the corona crisis and lower demand from the food service.
Consumption
Pork consumption in Europe increased by 1,2% last year. According to the European Commission's forecast, consumption will increase by 2021% in 1,4 to 32,7 kilograms per capita. Beef consumption fell by 2,5% last year to 10,3 kilos per person. A decrease of 2021% is expected for 1.
