Piglet export suddenly slows down considerably

19 April 2021 - Chanti Oussoren

While the Dutch piglet export had a good taste from the beginning of the year, there is now a hitch. Export figures have fallen sharply.

The pork market is waiting for warmer weather, which could give meat sales an extra boost. The real barbecue weather has not yet arrived. The DCA Exchange Price 2.0 has therefore been stuck at the same price level for several weeks and cannot increase.

This also makes it difficult to increase the piglet price. Because fattening pig farmers cannot immediately place pigs ready for slaughter, there is also less space for laying piglets. The demand for piglets from exports is also considerably slower than in previous weeks.

Piglet exports are declining
In week 14, total Dutch piglet exports collapsed. In total, almost 110.000 piglets were exported. This is approximately 25.000 fewer than in the same period last year. The drop is sudden and significant, because in week 13 a total of almost 140.000 items crossed the border.

The majority of the piglets, approximately 62.000, were exported to Germany. Compared to the previous week, this is a decrease of approximately 18.000 pieces. The Spanish demand has also fallen sharply in a short time, but less sharply than the German demand. In total, almost 14 piglets went to Spain in week 30.000. In week 13 there were still more than 35.000.

Because export demand has dropped sharply and the fattening pig market is not running smoothly, there is no room for an increase for the DCA BestPigletPrice. Loose couples are a little more difficult to place. The pressure is starting to increase a bit. Nevertheless, the DCA BestPigletPrice remains stable this week at €52,50 per piglet. The VEZG quotation also remains unchanged in Germany, which amounts to €53 per piglet.
