The number of wild boars tested positive for African swine fever has risen to 1007 (as of April 18), according to the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (FLI). As far as is known, the boars were all found within the cordoned off areas. Meanwhile, the German agriculture minister still hopes for cooperation from China to resume pork exports to China.
All new cases were found in the provinces of Brandenburg and Saxony. The German Ministry of Agriculture once again emphasized that the fight against ASF demands a lot from those responsible in the region and from livestock farmers. Recently there was criticism of the fight against AVP. Among other things, there would be a lack of central control in the AVP approach. This has been complied with by appointing a State Secretary as the central coordinator. By having communication from all the different sub-areas run via a central point of contact, a better and more structured supply of information should be created for the German Minister of Agriculture Klöckner.
European Union contributes to fencing
A request from Germany to the European Union to assist the affected provinces of Brandenburg and Saxony in building additional fencing and maintaining it has been granted by the EU. The provinces can count on a contribution of €9 million in tackling AVP. The money will be distributed based on how much each region has incurred so far since the first case of ASF was discovered in September 2020.
Klöckner is again in talks with China
At the same time, the German minister again held talks with her Chinese counterpart. The aim was to come closer together about resuming German pork exports to China. Although there seem to be no concrete leads for a quick reopening, they did decide to set up a German-Chinese expert group. This group must inform both ministers about the situation in the further course of the talks.
