In the East German state of Saxony, as many as 20 new cases of African swine fever (ASF) were reported on Tuesday (April 21) by the Friedrich Loeffler Institut (FLI). This increases the total number of infected boars in the state from 108 to 129 in one fell swoop.
The number of confirmed infections of 21 in just 1 day in the province is equal to the number of infections in the previous 3 weeks. The number of cases of AVP therefore certainly does not yet show a stabilization or decrease. New cases of AVP were also reported in Brandenburg on April 20 and 21. This concerns 14 new reports. A total of 1051 pigs have now been tested positive for ASF in Germany, of which 134 in the month of April.
China introduces new reporting system
The situation with regard to AVP is also not yet under control in China. It recently emerged that a large series of outbreaks took place in the north last winter in which many animals died. The Chinese government has therefore drawn up a new plan in which the country is divided into 5 different regions.
Each region will be given more responsibility for the timely reporting of new cases, mapping the risks in the event of an outbreak and drawing up control guidelines. There is the possibility to set up disease-free zones. The regions also have the option of limiting the transport of pigs to only the transport of breeding animals and piglets. The central government already introduced stricter transport rules for pigs from 1 April. The new plan was tested in the south of the country where, according to a Rabobank analyst, the disease pressure was recently lower than in the north.
