In Poland, more and more pig farmers are throwing in the towel. Many pig farmers stopped during the first 3 months of the year. This also has consequences for the pig herd – although it is declining relatively less sharply.
According to an analysis by the Gobarto Group, one of the largest Polish meat processors, as many as 3 pig farmers stopped working in the first 2021 months of 23.000. In an automatic calculation of the pig herd, this would amount to a decrease of 20%.
In practice, this decrease is lower because mainly smaller companies and private individuals stop. According to the April poll, there are about 10,2 million fewer pigs, a decrease of almost 10% compared to the end of 2020.
Crisis causes little optimism
According to the Gobarto Group, the reason for the large number of quitters is the crisis surrounding ASF and corona. Both led to a low profitability of pig production last year. It is expected that price pressure, combined with rising feed prices and the uncertain outlook, will cause more Polish pig farmers to throw in the towel in the near future.
