Brandenburg wants pig exports to Poland again

4 May 2021 - Stef Wissink

In Germany, from April 27 to today (Tuesday, May 4), another 37 infections of wild boars with African swine fever (ASF) have been reported. That is less than in the week before. Furthermore, there seems to be a difference in the development in AVP hotspots Brandenburg and Sachsen. Brandenburg wants to be able to export pigs to Poland again.

The 37 infected wild boars are 14 fewer than in the period from 20 to 27 April. In Brandenburg, 19 new cases were reported. 18 new infections were detected in Sachsen. The situation in Brandenburg seems to have stabilized somewhat recently, while the number of infected animals in Sachsen is increasing rapidly.

Brandenburg seems peak over
In Brandenburg, after a peak in the number of infections in December and January, the trend now appears to be slightly declining. This may be a first indication that the situation is slowly stabilizing somewhat. No new areas were infected in April either. All boars found were found within the existing cordoned off zones.

In Saxony the situation seems less stable. The number of infections has been increasing rapidly, especially in recent weeks.

Agriculture minister wants to be able to export slaughter pigs to Poland
Despite the contamination risks, the minister of agriculture of the state of Brandenburg, Alex Vogel, would like farmers in his province to be able to export pigs to Poland again. To this end, he has sent a letter to the national minister of Agriculture, Julia Klöckner. In it he asks her to plead with the EU for an exceptional measure. Transporting pigs across the border is prohibited in the event of an outbreak of ASF. According to Vogel, such a measure is useful if there are still disease-free zones between 2 areas with infections. However, this is not the case here. Due to its geographical location, pig farmers in Brandenburg have close supply links with Western Polish slaughterhouses. He therefore asks that these deliveries be made possible again.
