Worldwide, African swine fever (ASF) continues to concern authorities. New cases of wild boars have been reported in Germany. Commercially raised pigs are also affected in Russia and Asia. The Philippine government is taking strong measures.
In the East German provinces of Brandenburg and Saxony, 4 wild boars were found last week (11-37 May) that were found to be infected with ASF. In Brandenburg, the number of new infections seems to be decreasing somewhat. Brandenburg counted 15 new infections and therefore comes to a total of 967 boars with ASF found. 19 new cases were reported in Saxony, bringing the total number of ASF reports in this province to 171. This is evident from the most recent figures from the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (FLI). In both provinces, dogs and drones are still intensively searched for cadavers. Quick locating and removal prevents new infections.
Large pig farm infected in Russia
In Russia, ASF was confirmed on 25 April on a fattening pig farm with 15.000 animals. The company was located in the vicinity of Tambov, about 500 kilometers south of Moscow. Last winter, more than 500.000 pigs were culled in Russia to curb ASF. The country also stated the expected production increase for pork over 2021 already down at due to ongoing outbreaks of the virus disease on pig farms.
Philippine prime minister announces drastic measures
Concerns about the spread of ASF are growing in the Philippines and the government announced far-reaching measures on May 10. Due to the spread of the virus, the entire country is in a state of disaster. This will allow the Philippine government to immediately use emergency funds to fight the disease and rebuild the pig population as quickly as possible. In addition, all law enforcement officers, including the military, will be deployed in the country to take all measures necessary to stop the spread of the virus.
The consequences of ASF on the availability and prices of pork are significant. Inflation in the country has risen sharply as a result of the outbreak to far above desired levels of the country's central bank. The country then announced want to import more pork.
South Korea reports first case in a long time
In South Korea, no new infections had been detected on pig farms for 7 months. On Wednesday, May 5, the South Korean Ministry of Agriculture announced that a company had become infected in a northern province of the country bordering North Korea. 401 pigs have been culled on the farm. A 48-hour transport ban was also announced in the province of the contamination and neighboring provinces. In 2019, 14 companies in South Korea that were found to be infected with ASF were culled, in 2020 there were only 2.
