Despite the fact that the demand for piglets is back in positive territory, that is no reason for the trade to increase the DCA BestPigletPrice. Why?

According to the latest figures from RVO, the export of piglets in week 18 2021 amounts to a total of 122.126 piglets. This is a decrease of 17 piglets (-5.229%) compared to week 4,1. Despite the total decline, which in terms of numbers was most attributable to Belgium and Luxembourg with a decline of 8.170 piglets (-40%), Spain is actually experiencing a growth in sales with 31.276 piglets.

In Germany, the piglet price set by the VEZG (Vereinigung der Erzeugergemeinschaften für Vieh und Fleisch) for week 20 stabilized. At €49,50, the price of German piglets has been stable for 3 weeks, after the price was reset in week 17 from a level of €53. VEZG's line was also followed by ISN (Interessengemeinschaft der Schweinehalter Deutschlands) in terms of mutation and price level for week 19. For the piglets for slaughter, ISN recorded prices that were €17,10 lower compared to their 25 kilo counterparts. Stable prices also characterize the Danish piglet market.

Piglets remain in high demand
Despite the dip in the DCA BestPigletPrice (BPP) in recent weeks, mainly due to the fall in the price of pigs, piglets remain in high demand in the Netherlands. The vast majority of traders report that placing piglets is progressing more positively, not least now that exports to Spain are picking up again. For example, piglets from 1 UBN (Unique Company Number) collected in the Netherlands are traded for €65 and collective flocks are sold for approximately €4 less.

However, given the level of fattening pig quotations and the increased feed prices, traders believe that the time is not yet ripe for an increase in the BPP. In other words: the BPP is at a good level and remains unchanged for week 20. That is €48 per piglet. The explanation accompanying the BPP this week shows that this approach is widely supported by the trade. Due to Whit Monday, the next BPP will be announced on Tuesday, May 25.
