German pig price sharply higher, optimism reigns

The German pork price lost some of its gains from earlier this year in April. In recent weeks the market seems to be developing more positively again. The number of available pigs for slaughter is decreasing somewhat and it can be noted from the market that German pig slaughterers are cautiously inquiring about Dutch animals again. Relaxed corona measures in several countries have also given the meat trade a boost. This also means that slaughterhouses are more interested in buying pigs.

Hope for barbecue weather at Pentecost
The upcoming long weekend around Pentecost, in combination with better barbecue weather, could further increase the demand for meat. After Pentecost there will also be a number of full slaughter weeks and the slaughterhouses will need more pigs to fill the hooks.

All together this makes a significant increase in the German VEZG rating possible. This will increase on Wednesday, May 19, by €0,08 to €1,54 per kilo of slaughtered weight. This is the highest quotation since July 2020.
