Number of ASF cases in Germany a bit lower again

25 May 2021 - Stef Wissink

Last week (18 to 25 May) 8 wild boars were found in Germany that were found to be infected with African swine fever (ASF). That is again less than the week before. All infected animals were found in the province of Brandenburg.

This is evident from the figures of the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (FLI). The weekly number of confirmed infections has been declining for some time now, fueling hopes that the situation will stabilize. Still, hunters involved in thinning out the wild boar population have informed German media that they are still concerned about the ASF spread. Although a lot of fencing has already been placed around infected areas, according to the hunters, this offers no guarantee for the future to stop boars.

No new cases in Saxony
While the number of infected animals in Brandenburg has fallen sharply in recent months, the situation in Sachsen seemed to be deteriorating slowly. More animals infected with ASF were found every week. See you this week. In the period from 18 to 25, no infected animals were found in the province. In Sachsen, 186 infected boars have now been found since the start of the outbreak, 1000 in Brandenburg.

Poland situation
Poland also reports some stabilization of the ASF situation. This year, some 1270 ASF cases were reported up to mid-May. Last year, nearly 2.400 boars with ASF were found during the same period. Although the decline is significant, the geographical spread of the cases is still large and one must be careful not to be too optimistic. The number of ASF cases in Poland also declined in the past, but then increased again sharply.
