Germans still prefer real meat

25 May 2021 - Redactie Boerenbusiness - 2 comments

German consumers still prefer real meat products. The market for meat substitutes is growing rapidly, but remains a niche for the time being. This is according to figures from the German statistical office (Destatis).

German food companies produced about 2020 tons of meat substitutes in 83.700. That was 23.300 tons, or just 39% more than in 2019. The total value of these products produced increased at about the same rate. The total market for meat substitutes in Germany was worth €2020 million in 374,9, 37% more than in 2019.

Market remains small compared to meat production
Although the production of burgers and sausages based on, for example, soy and peas is increasing rapidly, the market is still very small compared to the regular German meat market. Total German meat production in 2020 was 7,8 million tons, representing a value of €38,6 billion. As a result, the economic value of product produced by German meat processors fell sharply. In 2019, the value of all meat produced in Germany was €40,1 billion.

Despite the growth of the meat substitute segment and the contraction in the production of real meat, the market for meat substitutes remains modest in size for the time being. The market share of meat substitutes in the total German meat market was approximately 2020% in 1.
