Despite the positive segment in the pig market in the middle of last week - after the sharp increase in the VEZG quotation - the rise in the German pig price has come to a halt.
An increase of €0,12 in the past 2 weeks appears to be the maximum achievable for the time being: this afternoon (May 26) the price remained stable at €1,54 per kilo. A number of factors dampened the mood.
In absolute numbers, the supply of pigs in Germany is not large, certainly not compared to recent years. Nevertheless, the canceled slaughter days of the past period ensure that the slaughterhouses can fill the hooks relatively easily. However, according to the pig slaughterers, the biggest spoilsport is the meat trade. The persistently cool and changeable weather has ensured that the barbecue season is not getting off to a smooth start. Moreover, it can be heard from some parties in the market that exports to Asia are under some pressure.
All in all, the circumstances apparently do not allow pig prices to increase further. However, a positive price movement, with better weather and full slaughter weeks in prospect, may still be possible in the coming weeks.
