Vietnam suspends imports of live pigs from Thailand. This decision was made after African swine fever (ASF) was discovered on a transport in May.
On May 19, ASF was discovered in a batch of 980 pigs imported from Thailand. The Vietnamese government made the announcement on May 28 to stop pig imports from Thailand. The import ban will come into effect on June 30. Companies that deliver according to signed contracts are allowed to export until June 30, but under strict quarantine.
Vietnam itself is well on its way with it recovery of the domestic pig herd, after AVP thinned it out considerably. Thailand, however, plays a major role in this, as the country is a major supplier of breeding pigs to Vietnam. In the second half of 2020, no fewer than 500.000 Thai pigs were imported. Vietnam must miss these volumes from June 30.
Opportunities for Europe?
Europe can export a lot of pork to Vietnam. In the first quarter, Vietnam was number 6 of the main importers of European pork. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) previously expected a further recovery in Vietnamese production and, of course, a subsequent decline in pork imports.
With the import stop from Thailand, this forecast may be further postponed. After all, a major supplier of the live pigs will disappear. This may temporarily cause an increase in the need for pork and Europe can respond to this.
