Yield of fattening pigs recovers strongly in May

June 2, 2021 - Stef Wissink

The return in Dutch pig farming increased in May. The DCA Fattening Pigs Index in particular made a big step up. Despite the increases, both the DCA Fattening Pigs Index and the DCA Piglets Index are still below the 5-year averages. Both indices benefited from increased pig and piglet prices.

The DCA Meat Pigs Index rose from a level of 79,9 points in week 17 to a level of 112,2 points in March. The average reading for the past 5 years in this week was 115,5. The DCA Piglet Index makes a small step from 120,6 points in week 17 to 123,8 points in week 21.

Restoration of the pig and piglet market in May
After the pig market was characterized by several downward price corrections in April, fattening pig prices managed to recover during the month of May. The DCA Exchange Price 2.0 was increased by 18 cent each time in weeks 19 and 1, and in weeks 20 and 21 the price increased by €0.10. The price is now listed at €1,59, the highest level in more than a year. Ultimately, piglet prices also managed to benefit slightly from the improved mood on the pig market and the DCA BestPigletPrice was increased by €1,50 to a level of €49,50.

Feed more expensive again
The DCA pig indices therefore managed to benefit from the price increases for fattening pigs and piglets. However, rising costs tempered the increases. Pig feed for sows, piglets and fattening pigs rose again in price.
