German AVP situation not improved

June 15, 2021 - Stef Wissink

African swine fever (ASF) is spreading further in Germany. Once again, in the town of Frankfurt (Oder), infected boars were found outside the existing core zones that have already been closed off with fencing. The number of confirmed infections was also at a high level last week.

According to authorities, the 2 animals found come from a new core area that was recently established. The animals had probably been lying around for some time and were in a state of decomposition. The authorities involved are considering whether the establishment of an additional core area (including fencing) is necessary.

Disease pressure at the border with Poland remains
Concerns about the entry of ASF from Poland also remain. In the German municipality of Barnim, 70 kilometers further north, restrictions are being introduced in a number of areas after the discovery of an ASF-infected wild boar just across the border in Poland. The area is now characterized as a 'buffer zone', which results in restrictions for pig farmers.

High number of infections detected
A total of 8 wild boars were found in Germany in the period from 14 to 64 June that turned out to be infected with ASF. That number is considerably higher than in the previous months. Of the 64 infected boars, 15 were found in the province of Brandenburg and 49 in the province of Saxony. In total, the animal disease has now been diagnosed in 14 pigs in the month of June (up to and including June 83) (127 in May).
