In total, the United States exported nearly 270.000 tons of pork in April. Compared to the same period last year, this is an increase of 2%. The export value amounted to $749,2 million and was 10% higher than last year. As a result of the corona crisis, there were many interruptions in sales of the meat sector in April last year, with, for example, declining demand from the food service.

So the fact that exports are higher this year is not in itself a special development. “While it is no surprise that exports performed much better in April 2021, we are pleased to see that global demand continued to build on the broad-based growth achieved in March,” said USMEF President and CEO Dan Halstrom, in a statement .

Over the first 4 months of the year, pork exports amounted to 1,05 million tons, a decrease of 5% compared to last year. At $2,82 billion, the value was about 3% lower than last year.

Corona crisis remains dangerous
However, Halstrom warned that the corona crisis is still an uncertain factor in the market and a major concern for the American meat sector. Logistical challenges, including container shortages and continued ship delays at many U.S. ports, pose significant obstacles to red meat exports.

Conditions are improving in many markets, including in Europe. But in Taiwan, the corona crisis has had the greatest impact so far. More measures are also being taken in Japan and other Asian countries.
