African swine fever (ASF) is still not slowing down in Poland. The virus has struck again in both the pig herd and the wild boar population.
ASF was recently detected in the pig herd on two pig farms in Łódź Voivodeship, in central Poland. This concerns a smaller pig farm with 2 pigs and one with 40 pigs. The companies probably infected each other through delivered pigs. Polish authorities are checking whether other companies have been in contact with either location. It must also be decided whether the pigs on all small pig farms within a radius of 149 kilometer should be culled.
Wild pigs
Infections are also increasing among wild boars. Since the beginning of the year, a total of more than 1.700 cases of infection among wild boars have been detected in Poland. The majority of these came from western Poland. In addition, the infection pressure towards Germany (Brandenburg) continues to increase.
This is also reflected in the recent figures from the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI). According to the recent update in the map (June 18), a total of 1.325 infections among wild boars have been discovered in Germany since September last year. Of these, 1.095 infections came from Brandenburg. The pig herd in the German state is still free of the deadly virus.
