The FAO expects global meat production to increase by 2021% in 2,2 to a total of 346 million tons. According to the estimate, pork production will increase the fastest at 4,2% to a total of 114 million tons. This increase is largely based on a recovery in Chinese production, which is expected to increase by 10% to 46 million tons. However, despite the significant increase, global pork production remains 5% below the level before African swine fever struck China.

Beef production is forecast to recover by 1,2% to 72 million tonnes. Growth is expected here, especially from the United States, Brazil and China. For sheep meat production, a growth of 1% to 16 million tons is expected, here too China is a major stimulant in the overall growth. Global poultry meat production is expected to increase by 2021% to 1,3 million tons in 135.

Global meat trade
In contrast to global meat production, the FAO expects the global meat trade to decrease to 42 million tons. Recovery of Chinese production is the main reason behind the decline.

According to the FAO, pork trade fell by 0,6% to 12,8 million tonnes. An 8% decline in pork imports from China is expected. The need for imports from Vietnam, Canada and the United Kingdom is also decreasing. As a result of the decreasing import requirement, exports from Europe, Chile and Canada are also decreasing.
