Top 10 German slaughterhouses increase market share

Slaughters in the 10 largest slaughterhouses fell less sharply by 1,4% and stood at 43,77 million pigs. . This means that the total market share of these slaughterhouses has increased from 80,4% in 2019 to 82,2% in 2020.

Tönnies remains the market leader
Market leader Tönnies slaughtered 2,4% fewer pigs last year than in 2019. This was due to the temporary suspension of activities due to a corona outbreak in its largest production location. However, the decline of 2,4% was less significant than that of the national average. As a result, Tönnies' market share increased by 0,3% to 30,6%.

Vion, the second largest meat processor, slaughtered a total of 7,6 million pigs, increasing its market share from 13,8% to 14,3%. Westfleisch took third place in the rankings with a total of 7,47 million slaughters and a market share of 14%.

Smaller share of Danish Crown
Danish Crown slaughtered 6,6% fewer pigs than in 2019, resulting in a total slaughter volume of 3,1 million pigs. The slaughterhouse's market share fell from 6% to 5,8%. Danish Crown was even the only slaughterhouse in the top 10 whose market share has decreased.

Slaughterhouse Steinmann Holding has made the greatest progress and entered the top 10 for the first time. The number of pig slaughters increased by 10,7% to 1,35 million. This puts the slaughterhouse in eighth place on the rankings. The takeover of EGO's slaughterhouses was one of the underlying reasons for the significant increase.
