Hobby farmer in Brandenburg gets bonus to stop

20 July 2021 - Chanti Oussoren

Now that African swine fever (ASF) is also affecting the German pig population, concerns are mounting. In Brandenburg the hobby pig farmer is offered a bonus to stop temporarily.

Last Thursday it turned out that AVP had struck twice in the German pig herd in Brandenburg. In the meantime another contamination has been detected and the counter is currently at 2. Of these, 3 cases concern hobby pig farmers.

Hobby pig farmers
In view of the outbreaks among amateur farmers, Henri Wendorff, president of the State Farmers' Association (LBV) Brandenburg, calls for such practices to be limited. Due to the increased ASF risk, hobby pig farmers should no longer keep pigs for a period of at least one year.

Wendorff argues that anyone who keeps only 2 to 3 pigs (intended for their own consumption) cannot meet the high safety standards required of a certified company. "We are currently experiencing that there are increased risks of spreading the epidemic in hobby farming," he emphasized.

Bonus
To encourage the reduction of the number of hobby pig farmers in Brandenburg, pig farmers who will no longer keep pigs in the next 2 years will receive a bonus of €200 per pig to stop.
