Tönnies' investment in a slaughterhouse in the Spanish region of Calamocha, for which preparations are now being made, is being increased. The total investment in the location would originally be around €75 million.
Last September, the plans for the investment in Spain were announced. Less than a year later, expansion plans are already underway. This spring it became clear that the first permits had been issued and that the construction of the slaughterhouse can start this autumn. Now the planned investment in the site will be expanded from €75 million to around €100 million.
50.000 pigs a week
According to the original plans, a slaughterhouse with a capacity of approximately 30 pigs per week was to be built at the Calamocha site (North-East Spain) on a 50.000-hectare site. It is not known what the impact of the expansion of the investment will be on this original processing capacity. The slaughterhouse will be Tönnies' second in Spain and will employ about 1000 people.
Exploit Spanish export position
The intended investment will soon provide the group with plenty of opportunities to serve the export markets well. This is now not always possible from the German locations, due to the outbreak of African swine fever. Moreover, the recent discovery of the virus on 3 German farms with kept animals gives little hope of an improvement in this position in the near future. This gives the impression that the difficult position in the export destinations for Germany could last a long time.
