German pig price stable at low level

28 July 2021 - Stef Wissink

The situation on the pig market has still not changed much. A tight supply meets an even smaller demand and prices are under pressure. Can the VEZG quotation keep the German pig price at €1,42?

The full meat market continues to leave its mark on pig quotations. Chinese demand for pork is still at a reduced level and the holidays in Europe make the meat market even tamer. In the Netherlands, this already led to Vion not following the unchanged DCA stock exchange price 2.0 from last Friday and lowering its quotation by €0,03 to €1,51 per kilo carcass weight, including VAT.

Other export markets are struggling with corona
A number of export destinations that recently absorbed part of the lost Chinese demand, Thailand and Vietnam, are also lagging behind at the moment. Both countries are dealing with many corona infections, causing governments to introduce new restrictions. In addition, Hong Kong's major import port is experiencing major logistical congestion.

The number of slaughters has also increased somewhat in recent weeks. While 26 pigs weighing 767.000 kilos were slaughtered in week 96,2, this increased to more than 29 pigs weighing 810.000 kilos in week 96,4.

In previous days, the circumstances had already led to calls from the slaughterhouses for lower quotations, which the VEZG managed to counter. The German VEZG price is unchanged at €1,42 per kilo of slaughtered weight.
