Piglet prices are creeping closer in EU

9 August 2021 - Chanti Oussoren

The situation on the piglet market is nothing to write home about, but that is not only the case in the Netherlands. The DCA BestPigletPrice starts a cautious decrease this week, but the negative difference with the German and Danish piglet prices is narrowing.

Piglet exports continue to put pressure on the market. Export volumes have fallen significantly and have not been able to match the levels of previous years in recent weeks. In week 25, total piglet exports reached a low point and only approximately 108.500 piglets were exported. This is only 4.000 heads above last year's low point during the pig congestion due to the corona crisis.

Since week 25, exports have been gradually increasing and in week 19 another 118.000 piglets crossed the border. This is a comparable output compared to 2019 and slightly below 2020 export volumes.

This cautious recovery does not come from exports to Germany, which are still far below average. In Spain, more piglets have been imported since week 26 and the level is again above the level of 2019 and 2020.

DCA BestPigletPrice
Last week the DCA BestPigletPrice remained stable at €31 per piglet, but the surcharge was reduced by 8%. This week, the piglet price will still drop by €1, bringing it to €30 per piglet.

The German VEZG quotation fell by €5 this week to €31 per piglet. The Danish price was previously considerably higher, but it has also fallen significantly in recent weeks and will drop this week by €5,30 to €35 per piglet.
