Tönnies, the largest meat processor in Germany, is benefiting from the increasing popularity of meat substitutes. The company has recorded a strong increase in sales. While the turnover in 2019 still amounted to €8,3 million, Tönnies expects a turnover of €30 million (+250%). About €24 million of this comes from sausage substitutes and about €6 million from the meat substitutes category.
The vegetarian and vegan products of the meat concern Tönnies are produced in their own factory in Böklund. The capacities there are being expanded, so that the range can grow further. The group expects a turnover of about €24 million in the 'sausage substitutes' segment and about €6 million in meat substitutes before the end of this year. By 2025, total revenue in both areas is expected to rise to over €120 million.
Tönnies supplies sausage and meat substitutes under the brand names 'Gutfried', 'Veviva' and 'Es schmeckt. The offer is not only aimed at vegetarians and vegans, but also at flexitarians. In other words, those who occasionally want to go without meat. The German meat company has marketed chicken nuggets, chicken schnitzel or fish fingers especially for this target group. The company worked on these products for two years before they were 'ready for market'.
Future plans
Tönnies also wants to produce sustainable snacks, barbecue products and sauces in the future. As part of the sustainability agenda, it consciously does not use rainforest soy in all meat replacement products, but only European soy.
In recent years there have also been rumors about a possible takeover of Tönnies. Last week announced that it will remain a family business. Robert, Clemens and Maximilian Tönnies will keep their shares.
