The German meat group Westfleisch will close the slaughterhouse in Gelsenkirchen this year. The capacity will be moved to other locations, the company reports.
At the beginning of October, Westfleisch will close the slaughterhouse in Gelsenkirchen. The pigs that are normally slaughtered there can now go to the slaughterhouses in Hamm, Oer-Erkenschwick and Coesfeld. Last year, a total of approximately 970.000 pigs were slaughtered in Gelsenkirchen. The slaughter of all Westfleisch locations together last year was about 7,5 million units.
At the slaughterhouse in Hamm, when expanding the capacity, 2 shifts are being worked as much as possible in order to improve efficiency, says CFO Carsten Schruck in a statement. The total slaughter capacity of Westfleisch remains unchanged.
Staff
In principle, what changes in business terms is only the work location for the employees. In total, nearly 140 staff members work at the Gelsenkirchen site, but they are all offered employment at other sites within Westfleisch. Nothing is yet known about future use of the Gelsenkirchen site.
