German supermarket only wants German pig on shelf

25 August 2021 - Stef Wissink

The REWE Group, which includes several German supermarket chains, has announced that it will only offer German pork on its shelves from August 2022. There has been quite a bit of criticism recently about offers with cheap foreign meat in German supermarkets.

Even Agriculture Minister Julia Klöckner got involved in the discussion. She indicated that competitiveness in meat should not be about price, but about sustainability, animal welfare and quality. This should prevent livestock farmers from being exposed to enormous price competition.

Responded quickly
As a major player in the German supermarket industry, REWE was forced to react quickly. It issued a statement in which the group says it wants to source at least 95% of its conventional pork from German farmers from August next year. It wants to develop a 5-D strategy to achieve this. For this purpose, the animals must have been born, bred, fattened, slaughtered and processed in Germany.

Since last year, the company says it has been paying an extra to pig farmers to ease the pain caused by the difficult export situation for German pork. Lidl also temporarily participated in this, but canceled this bonus. The prices for pork were raised in the supermarkets and passed on to the other parties in the chain. REWE has now indicated that it will slightly increase its minimum price for pork.

The German Pig Farmers' Union (VEZG) has welcomed the announcements. A spokesperson called it 'an encouraging signal to family businesses in times of economic crisis in the pig farming sector'. Earlier this week pleaded the ISN already for a more prominent place for German pork on store shelves.

REWE Group
The stores of the REWE Group purchasing organization had a market share of more than 2020% in Germany in 20. This makes it the number 2 in the German supermarket world. It is also active in other European countries and achieved annual sales of more than €2020 billion in 75. The company's German supermarkets generated sales of around €2020 billion in 26,5, 12% more than the year before.
