Pig prices throughout Europe, but certainly in Germany, are under strong pressure. It is all the more striking that research by the German market research agency (AMI) in collaboration with the German Agricultural Agency (BLE) shows that pork in German stores was more expensive in June than a year earlier. In May, record levels were even tapped.
While German retail has already received a lot of criticism in recent weeks about offers with foreign pork, the results of this research may be fodder for new discussion. Despite the price slump that pig farmers are facing, pork in German stores was sold 2% more expensive in June than in June last year. The average price for conventionally produced pork was €7,47.
More expensive than record month of June 2020
Last June a provisional record was set for pork retail prices. Although selling prices were somewhat lower this spring, an upward trend was started again. Despite the fact that there were almost only reductions for pig farmers, pork in the shops in June 2021 was therefore even 2% more expensive than at the peak of last year.
Compared to 2015, when the periodic surveys started, pork on German shelves has become about 20,5% more expensive. The 2021 pig price for farmers has so far been an average of €1,397 per kilo. The average price in 2015 was €1,385. As a result, farmers received just 1% more for their animals this year than 6 years ago.
