Inside Pigs

It continues to buff on the piglet market

6 September 2021 - Wouter Baan

These are simply challenging times in the piglet market. The further lowering of the pig price will put the brakes on the sale of piglets even more. How does the DCA BestPigletPrice react to the sharp drop in the German piglet price?

As if the reductions in recent weeks were not enough, today again bad news came from Germany. There, the VEZG quotation received a major blow: a reduction from €5 to €20 per piglet. This is the lowest level in living memory and also typical of the very, very difficult market situation that the general media in the country has also become aware of. The Nordwest piglet price, which is recorded with a week's delay, is therefore also facing a significant reduction.

The situation is that even for current flocks of piglets, where everything is correct, there is often no buyer to be found. This is due to a total lack of confidence among fattening pig farmers in Northwestern Europe. Particularly in Germany, which has a major impact on sentiment on the Dutch market because of the many couples who find sales in the country every week.

BPP further down
Moreover, there are no incentives that can turn the tide. Dark clouds hang over the pig market and the usually difficult month of October still lies ahead. Vion lowers the pig price this week by 4 cents to 1,36 per kilo. The meat company points to the delta variant of the coronavirus as a disruptor in the difficult meat market. All in all, there is a lot of grumpiness in the sector.

Piglet sales in our country are too slow to remain unchanged, which could have been achieved last week, according to the statements of traders at DCA Markets. At the same time, the damage is less extensive than with our eastern neighbors. The quotation for week 36 drops by €3 to €24 per piglet.
