Significantly more pigs are being slaughtered in Denmark this year compared to previous years. The reason for this is...
In the first half of this year, the number of slaughters in Denmark increased by 7,9% to 9,16 million pigs compared to the same period in 2020. In recent weeks, the percentage growth in slaughters has only increased further.
No space in Germany
Traditionally, Danish pig farmers sell a lot of fattening pigs to German slaughterhouses, but sales are stagnating. In Germany there is considerably less sex. Because meat sales are very slow (due to export bans in Asia due to the outbreaks of African swine fever), there is less need for pigs from surrounding countries. Finding staff is a major challenge for German meat companies, which is at the expense of slaughter capacity.
In the first 7 months of this year, the export of Danish fattening pigs to Germany fell by almost 4%. Dutch traders have also had difficulty dealing with the supply in Germany for some time. The fact that the Danes are left with the pigs is further reinforced by the growing pig herd in the country. In July, Eurostat counted 1,25 million sows, a growth of 2%. This makes it likely that the high slaughter figures will continue for the time being. Especially because the number of slaughters often increases in the autumn period.
Press pig price
The pressure on the pig price of Danish Crown is therefore great, just like in the rest of Europe. The quotation has fallen back to €1,17 per kilo in recent weeks.
