Minor mood on pig market remains

11 September 2021 - Wouter Baan

There are no visible impulses to ease the continuing bad mood in the pig market. The DCA Scholarship 2.0 may hold up, but the mood is not good.

It's been the same, sad song for weeks. Getting pigs placed is a tough business. The offered lots must be passed on each time. And with autumn approaching, this will certainly not decrease in the coming weeks.

No ways out
In Germany deliberates politics will focus on a solution to the derailed situation next week. To expect miracles from this now is a bit naive. But there are no other ways out. German slaughterhouses in particular are holding back due to the export bans in Asia, but in the Netherlands too, it is reported that no too many pigs are slaughtered. With 295.992 slaughters, the slaughter figure in our country was slightly higher last week.

The fact that the offered lots are not traded on the Internet exchange is indicative of the current situation. The demand for sows for slaughter is completely nil. Some traders are trying to come clean in Eastern Europe and sometimes with success.

The meat market is also not receiving the hoped-for impulses. You could still argue that meat sales this week were less bad than in previous weeks, but in any case they were not good. Inventories are and remain high. China purchases much lower volumes than, say, a year ago.

DCA Scholarship price unchanged
Although prices in Germany were unchanged this week, there are doubts in the market as to how solid this bottom is. There are fears of new (possibly significant) reductions. However, the DCA Exchange Price 2.0 does not take this into account and remains at €1,24 per kilo for the slaughtered pigs. The price of live pigs is also unchanged at €0,94.
