ISN, the representative of pig farmers in Germany, is pleased that supermarkets are offering meat. This can give the pig prices some relief in the long run.
Following Aldi .'s lead also has Lidl indicated to offer German pork. The idea behind this is to reduce meat stocks by boosting sales. An estimated 360.000 tons of pork hangs above the market in cold stores. In comparison, in 2020 Germany produced 4,7 million tons of pork (slaughter weight).
Although it sounds like a contradiction to fight the price crisis in the pig industry with stunt actions, according to ISN it is a step in the right direction.
Reducing meat stocks first
The representative is of the opinion that the meat stocks must first be reduced before the demand for pigs can be stimulated. And because German consumers are extremely price sensitive, stunts are likely to be effective. The ISN calls on other supermarkets to follow the example of Aldi and Lidl.
