According to Germany's largest pig slaughterhouse Tönnies, the situation on the pork market is so bad that the entire chain is at stake. Clemens Tönnies again urges politicians to take action, this time in an interview with the Neuen Osnabrücker Zeitung.
The butcher expects from politicians an unambiguous vision for the future of German agriculture. Tönnies says he fully supports the plans to only work with barns by 2040 where all animals have access to the outside air. "These plans must be continued, otherwise livestock farming will sooner or later disappear from Germany," said Clemens Tönnies in the interview.
Slaughterhouses also through tough period
According to the company, not only farms suffer from the current situation in the pig market. The butcher himself would also say that he is going through a difficult period.
Tönnies thus rejects criticism from the agricultural sector. Critics believe that the company is partly responsible for the crisis in the sector, with its continued downward adjustment of the quotations. Tönnies therefore offers to have its accounts assessed by an independent party. According to him, this will show that he himself is also suffering from the current situation and that the company 'also now deals fairly with suppliers'.
Deteriorated by corona and AVP
According to the company, the situation on the pig market has deteriorated in particular due to the corona pandemic and the outbreak of African swine fever on German territory. According to Tönnies, the entire chain is under water. He says the largest German pig processor has never experienced a situation like the current one in XNUMX years.
