Danish slaughterhouses are no longer able to cope with the large supply of fattening pigs. The largest slaughterhouse in the country, Danish Crown, therefore sees no opportunity to admit new suppliers.
It is not the first time such a delivery stop has been introduced. Last autumn, corona outbreaks at several slaughter locations also caused a significant shortage of processing capacity and the company did not allow new suppliers until March 15 this year. At the time, existing suppliers were also able to supply fewer animals.
Swine fever affects domestic supply
However, there are other reasons why the processing capacity is currently not large enough. According to Danish Crown, outbreaks of African swine fever have resulted in a significant reduction in the number of piglets exported to Germany and Poland. These piglets are now forced to be fattened in Denmark itself. The slaughter numbers have therefore risen sharply since last summer and are now too large for the available capacity.
At the moment the slaughter backlog is about one week. In this context, Danish Crown has decided not to take on any 'new' pigs. For the time being, existing suppliers can still supply the normal number of animals.
