There will definitely be no European support package for the pig sector that is in crisis. Brussels believes that the Member States should decide for themselves whether they pay pig farmers.
During the meeting of European agriculture ministers that took place yesterday (November 16), EU Commissioner Virginijus Sinkeviciu said that no measures are being taken, for example by setting up a pork purchase scheme. Sinkeviciu spoke on behalf of Janusz Wojciechowski, the Polish European Commissioner of Agriculture, who is in quarantine because of corona.
The Netherlands against European support
The call to intervene was supported by thirteen Member States, including Belgium and France. The Netherlands and Spain are not advocating support, just like Germany initially did. The motivation for voting against is often that a pork purchase scheme is not a solution, but rather postpones the problems.
It is possible that the Dutch government will come up with measures to accommodate the pig sector in this price crisis. Last week, Linda Verriet, president of the Pig Farming Producers Association (POV), had a extensive interview know with this site that the POV is in talks with the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality for liquidity support.
