Meat lovers will soon be able to stock up at Makro. The major supplier will be offering half pig carcasses. The aim is to meet buyers in the rising food inflation.
This is reported by the Belgian agricultural news site Felt† Makro has already experimented with half beef carcasses and will now also offer half pig carcasses. Makro expects (meat) prices to rise sharply from the new year due to the turmoil in global commodity markets† Beef and poultry, in particular, are scarce and therefore expensive. Half carcasses provide customers with a quantum advantage.
The idea comes from China where consumers are used to buying (half) carcasses. With this, the Chinese know for sure that they are not buying a pig in a poke. In other words, the carcass proves that pork is actually pork.
For the troubled pig market, Makro's plan is a welcome initiative, although the volumes obviously make no difference. There is currently an oversupply of pork. Slaughterhouses are also faced with major staff shortages, especially deboners are sorely missed.
