Emergency support for pig farmers in Belgium

22 November 2021 - Wouter Baan

The Flemish government is making €9,2 million available for emergency support to the pig sector. Entrepreneurs have been confronted with significant losses for a long time.

Hilde Crevits, the Flemish Minister of Agriculture and Food, realizes that the government cannot solve the crisis alone. In a statement, she says that the Flemish government would still like to accommodate entrepreneurs, especially those who have invested in sustainable barn modifications over the past few years.

While prices in the Netherlands have been under heavy pressure for a few months, the crisis in our southern neighbors has been going on for much longer. In September 2018, African swine fever unexpectedly loomed there and it has gone downhill since then.

Due to imposed export bans, Belgium was unable to take advantage of the high Chinese demand for pork. Then came the corona crisis and feed prices have risen sharply in recent months. Earnings are therefore under severe pressure. The Belgian pig sector is therefore going to work together to cope with the crisis, says Crevits. To this end, a letter of intent was recently signed for a new to be established trade association.

On a European scale there will be no emergency support, it was announced last week. The European Commission indicates that Member States must determine for themselves whether they are going to set up a support package. The Pig Farming Producers Association (POV) is discussing this with the Ministry of Agriculture.
