From tomorrow (November 25) Russia will again allow imports of pork and beef from twelve different Brazilian companies. This was announced by the Russian food watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor.
Last week it was announced that three companies had already been granted permission to resume exports of beef to Russia in November, including a location of meat giant JBS. Rosselkhoznadzor says it will continue to work on allowing the import of meat from more locations in the coming period.
The existing restrictions on the import of Brazilian meat were mostly imposed in 2017 after the banned substance Ractopamine was found in meat, according to Russian inspectors.
curb inflation
With a series of measures, including increasing meat imports, the Russian government hopes to curb the price level for consumers in the country. Inflation has also risen rapidly in Russia recently, reaching its highest level in at least five years in October. The Russian consumer price index rose almost 7,5% year-on-year in October.
The companies now admitted will mainly be concerned with the import of beef. Rosselkhoznadzor also announced that it would allow the import of 2022 tons of beef free of import duties from 200.000. The news comes at a favorable time for Brazilian exporters. The export of Brazilian beef to China was suspended in September after the discovery of BSE in two cows. China is Brazil's most important export market. China imported 106.000 tons of beef from Brazilians in August this year alone.
