Inside Pigs

Slightly smoother meat trade, no impulse pig price

24 November 2021 - Stef Wissink - 1 reaction

The German pig market is rippling impulsively towards the end of the year. The market seems to be running a little more smoothly, as evidenced by the quotes for pork parts collected by DCA Markets. However, it seems that there is no longer any incentive for the pig price.

Volumes in the meat trade have received some boost in recent weeks. For about a month now, the various pork component prices have also cautiously crept up, as can be seen from the by DCA collected quotes. Last week, bellies were sold for an average of 5 cents, necks 2 cents and shoulders 1 cent more expensive. However, slaughterhouses face high costs for labour, personnel and energy and purchasing prices are not increased. In addition, disruptions and corona outbreaks continue to cause pigs to pass through.

Offer large enough for the processing capacity
The ample availability of animals ready for slaughter, measured in terms of processing capacity, does not force slaughterhouses to pay more to suppliers. In Germany, 836.759 pigs were slaughtered last week and the average slaughtered weight decreased slightly to 97,6kg. Although the number of slaughtered animals was more than 10.000 lower than a week earlier, the slightly lower slaughter weight indicates that the supply does not seem to increase any further.

The German VEZG quotation for this week is once again €1,20 per kilo of slaughtered weight.
