As expected, the German pig price was set at the same level on Wednesday 5 January as the last quotation in 2021. The meat trade is weak in the first week of the year and the supply of pigs is more than sufficient.
Although the holidays fell on a weekend this year, and therefore fewer slaughter days were missed, the slaughter plans were recently adjusted significantly downwards. This means that some pigs have been left behind on the left and right that now need to be processed, it is reported. A number of pigs have also been deliberately postponed to the new year in connection with the Fixed Costs Allowance scheme.
Meat trade lukewarm
Although the meat trade is always quiet in the first weeks of the year, the corona crisis is not doing the market any good. Demand for pork is calm, according to the price quotes for the DCA Pig Parts listing. Tenders in particular have to pay the price after the holidays, with a minimum of €0,50 per kilo. Ribs, necks, shoulders, waists and cheeks are also cheaper. This has certainly canceled out some of the gains in the months of November and December.
The number of slaughters fell sharply in week 51 (Monday 20 to Friday 24 December) to just under 664.000 animals. The average slaughter weight remained unchanged: 96,5 kilos.
The German VEZG quotation for this week has been set unchanged at €1,23 per kilo of slaughtered weight. The quotations of the major slaughterers are still €0,03 lower at €1,23 per kilo of slaughtered weight.
