Piglets shortage, fattening pigs too many

10 January 2022 - Wouter Baan - 2 comments

At the start of 2022, the differences between the pig and piglet market will become even more apparent: where the demand for piglets is good, there are plenty of pigs ready for slaughter.

The piglet trade started the year smoothly. In short: the demand for piglets is good. In the Netherlands, fattening pig farmers usually want to finish production quickly once the fattening pigs have been delivered. This is stimulated by rising prices. There is also purchasing interest for single couples.

Spanish demand is picking up
Outside national borders is also an excellent question. Exports to Spain are picking up now that the holidays are over. The Spanish quotation increased by €0,50 to €27,50 per piglet in the first week of the new year. Spanish demand will increase further in the coming weeks. There are also excellent placement options in Germany, although some German fattening pig farmers are calling it quits for another round. The German VEZG quotation increases this week - after a stable period around the holidays - by €1 to €24 per piglet. The DCA BestPigletPrice also increases by €1 to €28 per piglet.

The supply of fattening pigs is actually large, prompted by the slaughter delay at the end of last year. The market will have time to get back into rhythm.

Explanation:

The development of the prices of the various meat components and of the fattening pigs themselves hinder those of the piglets. However, the trade in piglets is described as smooth. Overall, there are not too many piglets, which would normally lead to more mood. However, that is not the case now.

There were a total of eighteen assignments this week (0). The numbers in brackets indicate how many assignments were missed at the bottom (negative number) and how many at the top (positive number). If there is a zero, all entries are included.

Comments from traders included with the price movement for week 2:
- Don't rush into the meat pig market.
- Quiet, everything will go well.
- Market positive, but fatteners are not prepared to pay much more for the piglets in these market conditions. Definitely don't take too big steps.
- Unchanged. The piglet market is already cooling down and the supply is increasing, sufficient piglets are available on the open market, while this was not the case last week. So everything unchanged.
