Vion did not publish a pig price for week 2 on Monday afternoon. The uncertainties in the market are too great to arrive at a good price, the company explains.
The outbreak of African swine fever in Italy is one of the headaches for the meat group. This makes it difficult to organize sales to the country. Several Asian countries have immediately stopped importing Italian pork. This also affects Vion, which exports hams and carcasses to the southern European country. Sales to the United Kingdom - an important market for bacon, among others - are also encountering logistical problems as a result of Brexit troubles. Something that has been going on for a long time.
Another factor in the background is the fact that the meat processing industry is not yet running at full speed after the Christmas holidays. As a result, the pig market has a rough start of the new year, although this is not the direct reason for postponing the pig price publication. Finally, Vion also mentions the rising corona figures, which means that the already scarce slaughterhouse employees have to be quarantined.
The penultimate weekly quotation was €1,31 per kilo. It is not yet known when Vion will announce the pig price for this week.
