For some time now, European member states have opted for support for pig farmers, but until now European Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski has not taken any action. Now that pig prices have not recovered, the call for intervention is growing.
Wojciechowski reported late December to look again at the market situation in early 2022 for signs of recovery. Earlier this week, the subject was raised again in a hearing. However, decisions about whether or not to buy pork through intervention have not yet been taken. However, the pressure on Wojciechowski has built up. At the beginning of this year, price pressure increased further and major European slaughterhouses revised their quotations downwards, including Vion in the Netherlands.
No signs of recovery
German committee chair Norbert Linsin said during the hearing that he sees no signs of a turnaround in the market. The whole tenor is that Wojciechowski wants to let the situation run its course by not intervening. The Pole countered the criticism by stating that he saw signs of market recovery in December. Pressure is also being built up from the European Parliament. The Belgian MP Tom Vandenkdelaere already made an appeal last week. Waiting longer is not an option for him due to the heavy losses that pig farmers are suffering.
Moreover tweeted the Polish European Commissioner on Monday 17 January about the cautious recovery of prices on the piglet market. However, he forgot to mention that pig prices are showing no signs of recovery.
